SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — The victim in a fatal crash that happened in Smithfield on Monday has been identified by police. 20-year-old Austin Dean died in a motor vehicle accident on Putnam Pike around 5:35 p.m. on Dec. 16. The incident involved two vehicles. The other vehicle’s operator and a juvenile passenger were transported to Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s. Their condition is unknown at this time. In a statement, School Committee member Gideon Gaudette said he was shocked to hear the “horrible news” of Dean’s passing. “He was a member of NAHS Class of 2023 and he attended Allen Avenue School when I was principal. I remember him as a friendly and kind young man. My deepest condolences to his family, friends and staff members who had an impact on his life. Rest in peace, Austin,” he said.
