Man arrested on outstanding warrants, shoplifting in Wareham

WAREHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — Wareham police said they arrested a 65-year-old man who allegedly had five outstanding warrants, and led them on a chase in a Target parking lot.
According to officials, it happened on Dec. 16 around 3:30 p.m. when officers were dispatched to Target on Cranberry Highway, for an active shoplifter.
When police, the alleged shoplifter was identified as, John Vacchino Jr. of New Bedford.
Officials said Vacchino allegedly left the store and got into an awaiting vehicle as the passenger.
Officers encountered the vehicle as it was attempting to exit the parking lot.
When Wareham officers stopped the vehicle Vacchino Jr. allegedly fled.
Wareham officers chased Vacchino Jr. on foot through the parking lot.
After a brief foot pursuit Vacchino Jr. was placed in custody.
According to police, Vacchino Jr. was in possession of tools to “defeat security devices.”
Throughout the course of the investigation, it was learned that Vacchino Jr. had an outstanding arrest warrant out of Carroll County Sheriff’s Department in New Hampshire, and four outstanding warrants out of various courts in Massachusetts.
Vacchino Jr. was also charged with shoplifting, two counts of unlawful deactivation/anti-theft device, unlawful possession of anti-theft deactivator/remover, and a fugitive from justice.
He was held without bailed, and arraigned yesterday.
