LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Wednesday! Rain showers are already moving into the area this morning, with scattered thunderstorms possible through early the afternoon. While severe weather is not expected, brief periods of heavier rain and a few rumbles of thunder will be possible. By this evening, the rain will push east, and a cold front will cross the region overnight. Temperatures today will start mild, ranging from the mid-40s in northern areas to upper 50s in the southeast. These temperatures wills start to drop as rain winds down and you can expect a colder afternoon than mid-to-late morning. Rainfall totals could reach upwards of an inch to two inches, with the heaviest rain likely falling between I-64 and the southern Kentucky parkways. Localized flooding is possible, particularly in parts of south-central Kentucky where soils are already saturated from recent rainfall. Overnight, colder air will filter in behind the front, dropping temperatures into the low 30s. Thursday will feel chilly, with highs struggling to reach the upper 30s to low 40s under mostly cloudy skies. LATE WEEK & INTO THE WEEKEND Another system will move through Friday, bringing a mix of rain and snow during the morning and transitioning to mostly snow as temperatures drop throughout the day. Light accumulations of snow are possible, especially in the mountains of southeastern Kentucky. Snow showers and flurries may linger into Saturday, particularly in the higher elevations. Roads could turn slick in some spots, especially bridges and overpasses, as temperatures fall into the teens and low 20s overnight SUNDAY INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK Sunday will be dry but cold, with highs in the 30s and lows dipping into the teens and low 20s overnight. You can expect another cold morning on Monday, but that will be ahead of some chances. By Monday afternoon, temperatures will start to moderate, and rain is expected to return late Christmas Eve into Christmas Day. Unfortunately, warmer air accompanying this system means any chance for a white Christmas is unlikely. An early look ahead at Christmas day shows temperatures likely slightly above average in the upper 40s and possibly low 50s.
