'Have a good day bro': Indy man gets 13 years for shooting gas station employee during a robbery

INDIANAPOLIS — A 21-year-old Indianapolis man will spend the next 13+ years in federal prison after pleading guilty to shooting a gas station employee with a rifle during an armed robbery.
George Tracy was sentenced Wednesday to 159 months in federal prison - followed by three years of supervised release - after pleading guilty to shooting a gun during a violent crime. Specifically, Tracy shot a gas station employee during a November 2022 armed robbery.
Court documents detail how on Nov. 22, 2022, Tracy robbed the Mobile gas station on Central Avenue in Indianapolis. During the robbery, Tracy shot what appears to be a rifle three times in the direction of the checkout counter.
One of the shots struck a gas station employee in the upper left leg, resulting in hospitalization. After shooting the victim, Tracy reportedly said "Have a good day bro" before taking around $200 from the cash register.
The robbery and subsequent shooting were both captured on security cameras. Photos of Tracy during the robbery can be seen below:
Police later searched Tracy's home and found the gun that was used in the shooting as well as the clothes he was seen wearing during the robbery.
U.S. District Attorney Zachary Myers said in a statement Wednesday that armed criminals like Tracy take away a sense of security from Indianapolis residents.
"Our hearts go out to the victim of this senseless shooting, who will carry the scars and trauma from this vicious crime for the rest of their life," Myers said. “Armed, violent criminals like this man rob the entire community of our sense of safety and security in our workplaces."
The FBI and Indianapolis Metro police investigated the case, which U.S. Attorney Jeremy Fugate then prosecuted. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, or PSN, which brings law enforcement together to combat gun violence and violent crime in Indiana neighborhoods.
