Where once there was Demery’s and then Au Bon Pain and then Kiko Milano and then a Peabody Museum pop up and then Patagonia, signature downtown storefront 1 Broadway finally has its newest tenant: Sweetgreen. Yale University Properties announced that the fast-casual salad chain would be moving into the 2,692-square-foot storefront, which lies at the corner of York Street and Broadway, in a Tuesday press release. The Broadway location is set to open in 2025. It will be Sweetgreen’s fifth Connecticut location, joining storefronts in Greenwich, Darien, and Westport, as well as a yet-unopened Farmington Valley location. “Sweetgreen has been one of the most frequently requested restaurants by both students and residents in our marketing surveys,” said Yale’s Alexandra Daum, associate vice president for New Haven Affairs and University Properties, in Tuesday’s press release. “The addition of such a well-regarded restaurant brand as Sweetgreen at our highly visible 1 Broadway location will serve as a beacon, drawing folks into downtown New Haven.”Sweetgreen was founded in Washington D.C. and is headquartered in Los Angeles.
