Wisconsin DOT updates winter road condition categories The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) says that it's important to not cut the party short by driving impaired, as it's "dangerous, reckless and never the only option." "Across the state, Wisconsinites are celebrating the holidays and the end of another year,” Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent Tim Carnahan said. “We encourage everyone to take responsibility and plan ahead if you plan to celebrate." Wisconsinites are encouraged to use ridesharing programs, take public transit or ensure that somebody is a designated sober driver while out. According to the release, somebody is either injured or killed in an impaired driving crash every two hours in the state. In 2023 alone, over 7,700 impaired driving crashes occurred in Wisconsin, with 186 people being killed as a result. The release includes the following: Drive sober: It's the law Drivers are prohibited from operating any form of vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of more than 0.08 in Wisconsin. Drivers under 21 are prohibited from any detectable amount in their system under the state's "not a drop" law. Anybody who refuses to take a blood/breath alcohol test will also lose their license for at least 12 months and may have their vehicle impounded. Taking action There are over 7,500 law enforcement officials across Wisconsin that are trained in Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement, which aids officers in finding and removing impaired drivers from roadways. Nearly 400 Drug Recognition Experts throughout Wisconsin help to prevent these tragedies by both identifying signs and working to convict those who drive impaired and keep them off the roads. From Dec. 13 until New Year's Day, the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign is an annual holiday partnership between the Wisconsin State Patrol and local law enforcement officials to keep the roads safe from those who drive under the influence.
