Quiet today, accumulating snow Thursday
Dec 18, 2024
From Storm Team 5...
Good Morning! Overall, not a bad Wednesday in store for us, with more clouds then sunshine today and highs around our seasonal average in the upper 20s and low 30s. With winds turning ever so slightly to the NW today, a few flurries or passing light snow showers can not be ruled out across the north and Door county. It will be a nice day to make sure the snowblower is working because it will be needed tomorrow. We will start partly cloudy tonight, but clouds will increase overnight and lows will fall into the teens.
The drive to work will be quiet tomorrow morning, unless your travels take you west of the Fox Valley, where snow will already be arriving. Snow for our area ramps up late morning, with widespread snow expected for the evening commute. The winds will crank up a bit as well, so expect tricky travel conditions tomorrow afternoon, evening and night.
A WINTER STORM WARNING has been issued by the National Weather Service starting at 6am Thursday and lasting until 6am Friday for Brown, Calumet, Marinette, Outagamie, Oconto and Winnebago counties. For Door, Fond Du Lac, Kewaunee, Manitowoc and Sheboygan counties, this lasts until 12pm Friday.
These headlines are warning for snow accumulations causing slick travel Thursday afternoon through at least Friday morning. Snowfall totals through Thursday night will be lowest up north, a blanket 2-4" for most of the viewing area, and south of Appleton will see 4-6" where the heaviest snow band will set up. With an easterly wind, some higher totals are expected from Algoma down to Sheboygan.
The snow will linger along the lakeshore communities on Friday morning, which could bring snow totals around Manitowoc and Sheboygan counties over 6". Otherwise, expect clouds to clear out and highs in the middle and upper 20s.
Turning cold to start this weekend with highs around 20 and single digit lows. Temperatures will start the uphill climb Sunday through the end of the month.
