RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– A man has been charged with murder after a victim died weeks later after an assault, said deputies.
Richland County Sheriff’s Department said on November 23, deputies responded in the 600 block of Kentucky Street in reference to an attempt to locate a suspect that was involved in an assault that occurred a few streets over around 11 p.m.
When deputies went to the location to find Raymond Jolly, they could hear what sounded like a human in distress and saw a victim lying on the floor.
After making their way into the home, deputies saw a 57-year-old victim with severe head trauma, and began to render aid and called EMS.
EMS took the victim to a local hospital where he later died due to his injuries on December 15.
While deputies were aiding the victim, deputies received another call for service in reference to a suspicious person, said the sheriff’s department.
Deputies were able to locate the suspicious person and identify him as Raymond Jolly.
When Jolly noticed deputies, he fled on foot and a short foot pursuit ensued, according to RCSD.
Jolly was caught and taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Once cleared from the hospital, Jolly was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, where he has been since detained.
Law enforcement said Jolly and the victim were roommates but investigators are still working to determine why exactly the assault happened.
Jolly was charged with attempted murder, which got upgraded to a murder charge, breach of peace, simple assault, three counts of assault and battery 2nd degree, and giving false information.
Also, he received additional assault charges and a breach of peace charge that stems from a separate incident that occurred around the same time.
