(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Colorado Springs Utilities (Springs Utilities) is asking locals in the area of Fillmore Street and North Nevada Avenue to refrain from calling 911 to report smoke from the Birdsall Power Plant on Wednesday, Dec. 18. According to Springs Utilities, the power plant, located at 213 Nichols Boulevard, is operating normally, though it is generating increased steam from its cooling towers due to ongoing maintenance. The steam is more visible in the colder weather and is easy to mistake for smoke. The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) posted that the department has received multiple calls and has sent several crews to the location, but emphasizes that there is no emergency at the plant. According to CSFD, Springs Utilities works closely with the fire department and will notify them if any emergency occurs.
