EPC Board of Commissioners appoints new coroner

(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — The new El Paso County Coroner has been appointed and will take over from Dr. Leon Kelly on Wednesday, Jan. 1.
The El Paso County Board of Commissioners announced on Tuesday, Dec. 17, that Dr. Emily Russell-Kinsley was chosen as the new coroner, and will take over the position the day after Dr. Kelly's tenure concludes on Tuesday, Dec. 31. Under the Colorado Constitution, the Board of Commissioners must fill the vacancy of the coroner's position until the next general election, ensuring uninterrupted operations of the Coroner's Office.
"I am honored to be entrusted with this responsibility," said Russell-Kinsley. "I look forward to serving the people of El Paso County and ensuring that the Coroner's Office continues to meet the community's needs while fulfilling its crucial mission to the highest standard."
Since 2018, Dr. Russell-Kinsley has served as the Deputy Chief Medical Examiner for the El Paso County Coroner's Office and brings a wealth of experience to her role. She began her career as a medical examiner in 2012 and has been recognized for her leadership and contributions to the field.

In 2019 Russell-Kinsley was appointed as the pathology representative for the Colorado Cold Case Task Force and has been a member of the Colorado Coroner's Association Board of Directors since 2019. She has been involved in legislative matters that show her commitment to improving the coroner system in Colorado in ways that would benefit communities across the state.
