(BUENA VISTA, Colo.) — The mountains are so stunning in Chaffee County, that you might wish you could take a piece of them home with you. In Buena Vista you can, thanks to one family-owned business that goes back generations. About 90% of the inventory at Mount Antero Treasures, is mined from Mount Antero. The jewelry and skincare store was started by a father-son duo in 1994. However, their story goes back to 1952, when the current owner's grandfather and great-grandfather chose the mining career path. "We definitely feel my father, (and) my grandfather's presence to this day. You know, it's it's been a heart and soul family business for so long," said Craig Cardwell, the current Mt. Antero Treasures co-owner. His family constructed a road up to the top of Mount Antero and later staked all of its peaks to secure mineral rights. They say it's the highest gem field (elevation-wise) in North America. "Here we are 75 years later, where we're still a mining family. We figured we're going to mine it, we might as well open a retail store and do a little farm-to-table action," said Craig. Their inventory includes several skincare items made with many natural minerals and gem clay. Craig said the skincare began after they noticed what the minerals did to their skin. "We would be working all day, then you kind of rub your hands and it would just be so exfoliated," said Craig. Tracie Cardwell, Craig's wife, and Mt. Antero Treasuresco-owner is an esthetician and knew that the materials would make for high-quality skin care products. "It's kind of like a multivitamin that soaks into your skin," said Tracie. "It's like a big drink of water for your skin. In addition to skincare, they also sell custom jewelry, belt buckles, and raw materials such as Smokey Quartz, Aquamarine, Topaz, and more. All the treasures are hand collected from dangerous locations, during a small window of time in the summer. Tracie said there are times when they go up and don't find anything while others times "you can go up there and hit big." "This year, for instance, we only got about six weeks' worth of mining, which is probably the shortest season we've had. It's just one of those business with peaks and valleys, and lots of effort as most small businesses are. It's a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, and we're happy to carry that on," added Craig. If you can't make it out to the store, you can also shop online. The Cardwells also provide lessons on mining and give people the tools they need to search a portion of their 16-hundred-acre property for treasures themselves. You just have to get a mineral searching license and be brave enough to drive up Mount Antero yourself. Beware... as even the Cardwells' say it can be scary.
