Who is eligible for a tax credit on their property tax bill?
Dec 17, 2024
MINOT, ND (KXNET) — As the holidays come to a close, the time to file your taxes is just around the corner. And if you are a homeowner, there is something you can do to save money.
The primary residence credit, which can go up to $500, is a credit homeowners can get to help offset what they owe on their property tax for their home in North Dakota.
"The primary residence credit originated during the past legislative session as part of a larger property tax and income tax relief bill," said North Dakota Tax Commissioner Brian Kroshus. "It provided up to half a million dollars in relief to North Dakota citizens, and as a part of that, lawmakers wanted to address rising property taxes as well."
People can now start applying for this relief. They moved the deadline up earlier this year, and applications will now be accepted until March 31st, 2025.
Kroshus is encouraging any and all eligible residents to apply. He outlined the requirements.
"Requirements are, it has to be a primary residence, you have to be a North Dakota resident as well, and there is a limit of one per household for the up to $500 in credit," Kroshus said.
He adds the only reason someone might get a little less than that is because they have a property tax that is below $500. It can only go up to the amount owed, and cannot exceed $500 dollars.

Those who get their applications approved will be waiting a while before they actually see it in action.
"It will show up as a credit against the property taxes they owe in 2025, the 2025 Property Tax year," Kroshus said. "So it will actually be reflected on the property tax statements they receive next December, not the current December... and it will be shown as a deduction against what they would otherwise owe."
Kroshus says they have already seen many applications turned in. As of Tuesday, they are already at 20,000.
"I know going to be another topic of conversation is property tax relief proposals overall in the upcoming legislative session," Kroshus said. "If the PRC is not continued, there will be another type of relief program I am quite certain lawmakers will come up with."
After you apply online, you should get a confirmation email.
If you don't have internet, you can call the office to get help to register.
Other eligibility requirements for getting the credit are that your property must be in North Dakota and it must be your primary residence.
