No injuries reported after explosion at Geismar plant, deputies say

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office said no one was injured after a possible explosion at Westlake in Geismar on Wednesday, Dec. 18.
According to the sheriff's office, there were no road closures, orders to shelter in place, or off-site impacts.
Chip Swearngan, the Westlake senior director of Corporate Communications and Government Relations, said the plant experienced a pressure event in its vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) unit at 9:25 a.m.
"The VCM unit was safely shut down and the unit was evacuated as a precaution. The local CAER was notified. The all-clear was issued at approximately 10 a.m.," Swearngan said.
