COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- In just three days, Ohio State will take the field for a December home football game against Tennessee in the first round of the College Football Playoff.
Coach Ryan Day addressed reporters in his final news conference before the game Wednesday and gave a clearer picture of how the offensive line will look.
Earlier in the week, Day revealed plans for the offensive line, which include rotating in freshman Luke Montgomery with other linemen against the Volunteers. He said Wednesday that Montgomery has taken snaps at left guard and Austin Siereveld is likely to roll between left and right sides while Tegra Tashabola.
In preparing for the playoffs, Ohio State quarterback Will Howard relies on his faith
Teammate Donovan Jackson expressed support for Montgomery's increased role on the front line. "I feel like Luke is versatile enough to plug and play anywhere we need him to be. He's had some great success at guard in the past couple of practices. He's shown a great ability to anchor," Jackson said. "And he's been playing stronger in my opinion so he's developing in the right direction."
The eighth-seeded Buckeyes look to end a decade-long drought against SEC schools. Saturday marks their first meeting with the Volunteers since 1996, when the two met in the Citrus Bowl, a 20-14 Tennessee win. Day says the energy is starting to increase in practice as kick-off gets closer. "Guys are getting after it. I feel like we got a good plan of what we want to get done this week," said Day.
Another area Day is watching closely is at kicker after Jayden Fielding's two short field goal misses in the loss to Michigan. "We'll make a decision at the end of the week how we want to enter the game," Day said. "Not that that is any different to any other week but we're are going to give it a hard look." Austin Snyder is the other kicker that will take reps with Fielding during this week's practices.
Ohio State is no stranger to the College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes are making their sixth appearance since the era began in 2014, and they're the only team that have appeared in four of the last six playoff. They're 3-4 in playoff games.
