Man dies in hospital after Northwest DC apartment fire

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- A man who was taken to the hospital in critical condition has died after a fire broke out in Northwest D.C. Tuesday night, officials said.
DC Fire and EMS (DCFD) responded to an apartment complex in the 3100 block of 16th Street NW. Sprinklers were activated, containing the fire in the unit.

Firefighters said they rescued a man from the apartment.
He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later died, according to officials.
In an update on Wednesday morning, DCFD said investigators determined the fire started because of improperly discarded smoking materials.
The fire was determined to be an accident and officials said the Fire Prevention Division will return to the scene Wednesday.
