Media barred from board meeting as district faces backlash over firings

APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) - Parents and community members flocked to a school board meeting at St. Francis Xavier High School Tuesday night hoping to learn more about why two administrators got fired last month.
A Local 5 News crew attempted to attend the meeting. As we made our way to the library where the meeting was set to take place, a district official said we couldn't be there. He said that because it's a private school they weren't allowing media into the meeting and that we couldn't be on the school's property with our cameras either.
On the district's website, it says that the board meetings are "open to the public."
Local 5 News was able to learn about what happened in the school board meeting by talking with people outside the school after it had finished.
"The Board of trustees had selected I think seven or eight of those letters (that community members had submitted ahead of time) and invited them to speak (in public comment at the meeting)," said Kathy Bates who was the longtime athletic director for Xavier High School, but has since retired. "So each of those people who were selected were allowed a five minute time limit to speak to the board."
She told Local 5 News that many of the speakers expressed concern that all the turmoil would affect the number of people who want to be part of the school district moving forward. She also said parents felt like it could also impact donors.

The district terminated popular Xavier High School principal Mike Mauthe back in mid-November. A spokeswoman with the Diocese of Green Bay confirmed to Local 5 News that he had violated the diocese's 'Our Promise to Protect' policy.

Appleton police officers confirmed with Local 5 News that they're currently investigating Mauthe's conduct. The spokeswoman for Appleton's police department said because it's an open investigation they can't provide any additional details at this time.
The school district also fired its superintendent Dr. John Ravizza for allegedly failing to meet reporting requirements in connection with the ongoing investigation of Mauthe.
Bates said that morale in the high school is low after the two firings. She said she feels like the vague reasons the district has given to explain the firings make it seem like the two men did something way worse than they actually did.
"(We would like) a statement coming out that Mike Mauthe and Dr. Ravizza didn't do anything illegal or immoral and we're awaiting something like that," said Bates. "It would go a long way towards healing this community which is what we want to see happen."
Bates said during the board meeting on Tuesday night, trustees didn't outline a path forward nor provide any clarifications on why the two men were fired.

A spokeswoman for the Dioceses of Green Bay said they don't have any additional comments about the meeting on Tuesday night. Local 5 News attempted to reach trustees through email, but never received a reply back.
The district's interim superintendent Katie Heim resigned earlier this month.
According to the district's website, anybody who wanted to address the school board on Tuesday night needed to submit a request to speak at least 14 days prior to the meeting.
Those at the meeting told Local 5 News that about 100 people were in attendance.
