RALEIGH, N.C. – The N.C. Forest Service has reinstated the requirement for open burning permits in 21 counties across Western North Carolina effective as of 8 A.M. on Wednesday, December 18. The affected counties include: Alexander Allegheny Ashe Avery Buncombe Burke Caldwell Catawba Cleveland Haywood Henderson Jackson Madison McDowell Mitchell Polk Rutherford Transylvania Watauga Wilkes Yancey Permits had been waived since October 12 under House Bill 149, the Disaster Recovery Act of 2024, to assist with cleanup and recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene. “North Carolinians never cease to amaze me with their ability to persevere through trying times and overcome great challenges,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Hurricane Helene was nothing short of devastating, but the people of this great state have responded, critical infrastructure has improved and communities are bouncing back.
