ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) - There are changes surrounding policies at Rochester-area malls. Eastview Mall, Marketplace Mall, and the Mall at Greece Ridge stopped providing free wheelchairs and scooters to patrons back in September. A spokesperson for Wilmorite told News 8 they were removed when customer services ended at the facilities at the same time. Wilmorite provided the following statement: "We closed customer service back in September. This included the free courtesy wheelchairs and scooters. We followed suit with most malls across the country due to the increased liability and insurance requirements for wheelchair and scooter use in malls. Our malls are ADA compliant." However, some local advocates for disability rights shared their concerns. "Without readily available wheelchairs and scooters, visitors with mobility impairments might struggle to navigate in the mall environment without having those things there. So, you might end up seeing more people falling because they don't have that equipment there, which they would've had before. That could potentially lead to more claims from people falling. I don't think anyone should have that type of barrier in front of them because something is not provided for them," said Rhonda Fumia, director for independent living services at the Center for Disability Rights in Rochester, "If the mall wants our business, they should be able to provide those certain things for people to go there and have that enjoyable experience." The Center for Disability Rights in Rochester offers a loan program for those in need of assistance. It can be used for eight weeks at a time or longer depending on insurance coverage. "We don't turn anyone around. We try to make sure we have all the equipment that people need. It's people coming from nursing homes, people who just had surgery, things like that. We definitely want to make sure people are bringing the equipment back to us in a timely manner. We also accept donations for people who want to donate that equipment to us. We will donate it back out to someone who might need it," said Fumia. The Center for Disability Rights encourages those in need of equipment to contact their insurance providers first. They do accept walk-ins for those who need coverage. More information can be found here.
