Your Character Matters: Dinuba student aids woman thousands of miles from home

PORTERVILLE, Calif. (KSEE) – This student took extraordinary action in a very ordinary place - all while thousands of miles away from home.
It started as a normal trip to Target for Alex Basilaia, a foreign exchange student at Dinuba High School.
"I was with my host family, with my host brother, and also another exchange student, Baturbek, from Kyrgyzstan. He's one of my closest friends," Alex said.
Alex's mother sent him on this journey to learn what he can from America, but also armed with lessons from home.
"If you can, just go and do it. This was how my mother raised me, this was how I was taught in my family," Alex said.
As they were checking out, a woman behind Alex started having a seizure and without hesitation he jumped into action.
“He didn't think, 'uh, what I'm gonna get from this?' He just went immediately and helped,” said Omar Youssef, another foreign exchange student at Dinuba High School. “My host father called 911. So it was really good kind of teamwork together. But I would say Alex took the biggest part in going in and helping her. Yeah, it's amazing.”
It is that same instinct to help that shows on campus, too. If there is a problem between students, Alex is not a bystander.
“Having a student like Alex on campus, when we have scuffles between students, many timesstudents will pull out phones - Alex jumps into action," said Evan Halstead, an academic counselor at Dinuba High School.
Alex is one of seven foreign exchange students at Dinuba High School. His counselor says these students bring diversity and life lessons to campus.
“It's an amazing program to bring different cultures onto campus so that our Dinuba family, our Dinuba communities can learn more about the different cultures and different characteristics that really connect humans. I mean, just basic, basic things like saving somebody's life is applicable around the world,” Halstead said.
Alex may only be here for a short time, but his impact on the Dinuba community will last a lifetime.
"So every day I'm trying to just share the good feelings, smile, and also the advice I had from my mother, from my older people in Georgia. I'm trying to make them better too, because again, we need each other," Alex said.
A true example of action and leadership, Alex is teaching his classmates the value of stepping up when it matters most.
