FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - With the growing popularity of services like tap-to-pay from companies like Square, paying with cash has become less common. But some small businesses say having cash can make transactions better. Fresno's Manchester Mall was recently rejuvenated by pop-up vendors selling clothes, knickknacks, collectibles, specialty services and more. Jonathan Munoz, who operates one of one of the permanent stores at Manchester Mall, says he's a big fan of pop-up events like that - especially as that's how he and his business partner started out when they began The Record Shop (TRS). Restaurants are now twice as likely to charge a ‘service fee’ – but where does the money go? Munoz says it was common for him and other pop-up vendors to use tap-to-pay services, but warns that there is a price for that convenience. "A lot of local businesses tend to use Square for credit card transactions," Munoz said. "[Square] takes about almost 3% of every sale - and that's just the initial transaction." Munoz says vendors looking to transfer their earnings to their bank right away could face an additional convenience fee on top of the initial 3%, forcing small businesses to consider raising prices just to turn a small profit. Munoz compares the situation to the two prices at a gas station, where there is a price for credit card transactions or cash transactions. He says cash purchases make it easier for small businesses to keep their prices low because they do not have to factor in any fees. According to Munoz, cash is not only a more affordable option for vendors as it gives them immediate access to the money that was spent in their store, and eliminates any mark-up by a credit card transaction. "Cash allows small businesses to have that cash in hand - so we can then go buy more inventory, use it for further investments or even pay bills," Munoz said. Munoz says though small businesses never want to discourage payment of any kind, he hopes customers remember that vendors are more than what they're selling. "[We're] your neighbors, your friends, your family," Munoz said. "When you support local it definitely goes the distance."
