MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A recent encounter on a Merced County highway prompted Merced CHP to remind the public who is allowed on them.
CHP says in a recent incident, officers encountered a person riding a bicycle on the freeway and quickly intervened by safely assisting them off the roadway.

Officials say it is illegal for bicyclists to travel on the freeway because they pose a significant risk to themselves and fast-moving vehicles.
CHP cites California law prohibiting pedestrians, bicycles, and other non-motorized vehicles from traveling on freeways for their safety and the safety of all motorists.
Officers advise anyone who sees a pedestrian or bicyclist on the freeway not to stop or assist them and to report the location to 911 so officers can respond.
