MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A recent encounter on a Merced County highway prompted Merced CHP to remind the public who is allowed on them. CHP says in a recent incident, officers encountered a person riding a bicycle on the freeway and quickly intervened by safely assisting them off the roadway. Festive lights can confuse drivers, Madera CHP says Officials say it is illegal for bicyclists to travel on the freeway because they pose a significant risk to themselves and fast-moving vehicles. CHP cites California law prohibiting pedestrians, bicycles, and other non-motorized vehicles from traveling on freeways for their safety and the safety of all motorists. Officers advise anyone who sees a pedestrian or bicyclist on the freeway not to stop or assist them and to report the location to 911 so officers can respond.
