FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Following a city employee strike that took place outside Fresno City Hall Tuesday, Mayor Jerry Dyer addressed the details surrounding the city's negotiations. Mayor Dyer says following several negotiations, the City of Fresno Professional Employees Association (CFPEA) declared an impasse after receiving their Last, Best, and Final Offer (LBFO) from the city on Oct. 2. City of Fresno prepares for possible employee strike "In total the package that we offered was valued at $2,564,000 and that averages out to, for their membership, to $6,200 per year, per member," Dyer said. "Their ask from the [CFPEA] was just over $4 million." The mayor adds the financial needs addressed in the Class and Compensation Study conducted several years ago were included in the city's LBFO. During the last bargaining session, the city stated there were 13 conditions they could not come to an agreement with. The CFPEA reportedly told the city it was all 13 conditions or nothing. Dyer says it would be "disheartening" to other labor unions if the city offered more money to the CFPEA when other unions have previously accepted similar offers. "We have a fiscal responsibility to the taxpayers of the city of Fresno and that is to provide a fair compensation to the employees, but at the same time compensate our employees at a level in which we can afford," the mayor said. Union President calls for strike against the City of Fresno The impact of the strike will be felt in areas ranging from the airport, garbage pick up, street maintenance, the bus and more. Dyer says the city has prepared contingency plans to have people fill in the positions on strike beginning Tuesday. "We appreciate and value the work that the [CFPEA] members do day in and day out. I've worked with many of them for many years, but there's only so much we can afford," the mayor said. Dyer says he hopes to reach an agreement soon and will work with the CFPEA through the holidays but says the city would need "a reasonable request." A second strike will possibly take place on Wednesday.
