TOPEKA (KSNT) - The Stormont Vail Foundation will see some upgrades to its Mother & Baby Department and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Stormont Vail Health announced in a news release on Tuesday that the hospital will receive upgrades to the Stormont Vail Health NICU and Mother & Baby Department. Stormont Vail Health announced that enhancements will be made to these departments with the help of team members and local donors like Advisors Excel, according to the news release. The upgrades will include adding "state-of-the-art" infant isolettes, also known as carestations, new recliners for mothers and families and a training simulator for the medical teams. Stormont Vail said in the news release it has Topeka's only Level III NICU. "Thanks to Advisor's Excel, our state-of-the-art NICU will remain equipped to continue to provide life-saving care to the 400 premature and seriously ill newborns we serve each year," Amy Burns, president and executive director of the Stormont Vail Foundation said. "Their support also aids in the healing and comfort a mother and family needs post-delivery." Comedian, actress Tiffany Haddish coming to Prairie Band Casino & Resort in 2025 Advisors Excel Creative Director Kevin Johnson created a custom mural as another gift for the NICU. The mural will be on the hallway leading to the unit. According to the news release, "This vibrant artwork, featuring playful baby animals against a Kansas landscape, is designed to uplift the spirits of all who enter and exit the NICU, providing a sense of comfort and hope during a challenging time." "On behalf of the entire NICU team, thank you to our generous donors and the Stormont Vail Foundation for helping us to provide not just medical care, but also hope and healing to families during one of the most challenging times of their lives," Alison Wilson, administrative director for women and children services at Stormont Vail, said. "We're thankful for the new resources. We know the mural will bring happiness and inspire hope to patients, families, and team members for many generations to come." For more Kansas news, click here.
