"I think building belief in players is something that I have gotten pretty good at and I have learned the power of belief," said Eck. "Building and growing I think I have done a good job of selecting the right kind of people, because you need to have players that have the right characteristics to develop."
Eck comes to New Mexico with 26 years of coaching experience, most of which was at the FCS level. In his three years as head coach at Idaho, the Vandals reached the playoffs every season with an increased win total.
In his short time since becoming head coach, Eck has begun recruiting and putting together his staff. He said one of his top priorities is to retain UNM players who entered the transfer portal following the season.
Eck also said that he plans to be active in recruiting players to come from the FCS level.
"Guys who have shown that they can be successful players at New Mexico and guys who like it here... "and just like the best players in the group of five can certainly go play at the power five level, the best players in the FCS can certainly come up and play for us."
As for how he wants to run things on the field, Eck did not get into any specifics. Rather than coming into a program with a built-in system, Eck said he will tailor it to the roster he has in place.
