Rapid City, S.D. (KELO) -- Community members packed into Rapid City's council meeting last night to weigh in on the future of Summer Nights. Summer Nights will continue in 2025 as long as it doesn't block off St. Joseph Street or Main Street. Woman hurt in Dec. 10 crash dies from injuries "So we've asked Summer Nights, we've approved them and we want them downtown. We'd like them to go find another location downtown that doesn't close down a main arterial street." City Council Ward 3 Kevin Maher Said Last night, community members spent more than an hour, giving reasons for why the event should either stay or move. "If downtown Rapid City is the hub of local business, why is this still being pushed on us? It is my understanding that 41 businesses have signed a document to not have this downtown." Roger Frye's Paint & Supply Julie Mueller Said A majority of the 20 speakers were in support of the current location. "I truthfully believe that Summer Nights was the catalyst that gives us the downtown that we have. It was the pre curser to Main Street Square, I just really do believe that." Powerhouse Dance DJ's & Sound Productions Jason Hoar Said Ultimately, the issue came down to location and safety. "I kind of focus on the public safety issue. You know that's the main route one way street going through downtown. That's how you get to the police station. So I just think it's time to move it. It's just gotten too big and too congested." Maher Said The next step for Summer Nights is to meet with Parks and Recreation to find a new possible location so that they can start scheduling musical acts immediately. Keloland News will let you know as soon as there's a decision.
