Amite man convicted in 2021 Franklinton fatal shooting case

FRANKLINTON, La. (WGNO) — An Amite man has been convicted in the case of a fatal shooting that happened in Franklinton in 2021.
The Office of District Attorney Collin Sims reported that a Washington Parish jury found 23-year-old Elijah Jyquarius Nehemiah Williams guilty of second-degree murder, aggravated burglary and three counts of theft of a firearm on Friday, Dec. 13.
Court documents state that the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office and Franklinton Police Department responded to a report of gunshots at a home near Tammy Lane around 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 28, 2021.

As deputies and officers arrived at the home, investigators said they found shell casings and the body of 27-year-old Kenneth Barker. Court documents state Barker was found with eight gunshot wounds.
During a search of the area, police said they found an abandoned disabled car on Highway 438. The district attorney's office reported that a man in a truck arrived while police were investigating the vehicle and told officers he traveled to the scene from Tangipahoa Parish after his son called him needing help with a flat tire.
Investigators said officers allowed the man to search the area for his son and noticed three people get into his truck on Chappell Road.

Police said officers then pulled over the man for a traffic stop after the truck drove back toward the area of the officers, where Williams and two other people were identified as passengers.
In a search of the truck, officers said they recovered several rifles, including an AR rifle and several backpacks allegedly containing handguns.
According to the district attorney's office, "the AR rifle and one of the handguns were later determined to belong to the murder victim."

Two of the guns recovered from the search reportedly matched the casings found at the scene.
During questioning, investigators said Williams and the two other people said they were at the scene when the shooting happened but were not involved with shooting Barker.
The two other passengers were sentenced for their charges in the case in February and December of this year.
On Friday, Williams was convicted in the case after a 50-minute jury deliberation.
Williams is set to be sentenced on Jan. 15, 2025. According to the district attorney's office, "second-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison."
