MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Memphis Police reported positive trends when it comes to crime this year. They broke down the latest numbers to city council members on Tuesday.Memphis police top brass reported overall crime is down nearly 20% compared to this same time last year.
They also touted violent crime dropped more than 7% year to date, robberies were down 24.55%, and interstate shootings were down 16%.
They claim fewer guns were reported stolen from cars, there were fewer reports of car break-ins, and nearly 39% decrease in reported motor vehicle thefts.
MPD officials say they made more arrests and sharing concerning stats that show children as young as 10 years old were nabbed for stealing cars.
Interim Chief CJ Davis adding the boost in arrests are also due to more roundups of outstanding warrants by a fugitive unit. She said they are targeting violent, repeat offenders, and now they're focusing on those wanted for domestic violence "We have a list of individuals we are working on who have repeat violent offenses," she said.MPD also told council members that murders are down year to date.
They didn't go into too much detail about aggravated assaults though, which remain pretty stagnant when you look at the city's data website.
We recently spoke to the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission President Bill Gibbons about that. He told us there's still a lot of work to be done.
"This year we will have roughly 12,000 reported victims of aggravated assault in our community. That's a lot of victims," Gibbons said. "We had pretty easy access to guns, which is kind of driving that to some degree."Council members echoing emphasize that work must done to tackle root causes. "We can't be passive like we have been. It's an urgency right now of what's happening in this city," Councilmember Yolanda Cooper-Sutton said. "If we don't deal with poverty and the root causes of it, we're going to continue to see the same thing over and over again."Local leaders and the crime commission told us they will be lobbying for more state and federal funding and hope next year the progress MPD reported only grows.
