Safety concerns grow at busy Overland Park intersection

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Concerns about new development take a different twist near a busy retail area in Overland Park.
City councilmembers approved a rezoning request for a new business earlier this month with a 9-4 vote. AutoSoak intends to use the four-acre piece of property to build a 60,000 square foot car service, that provides everything from oil changes to car washes. It’s unclear when construction will begin.
That tract of land, which sits just northwest of the U.S. Highway 69 and W. 159th Street, sits in a very tight area. Southbound cars departing 69 Highway and right again to access the business.
Chris Newlin, Overland Park Sixth Ward Councilmember, voted against the rezoning because of the potential traffic concerns this could present.

“This is not a great place to put a business. I don’t think it would survive. From the difficult to get in, and also driving that on a regular basis, it gets backed up and there’s no turn on right,” Newlin said on Tuesday.
This plot of land sits directly across W. 159th Street from the busy BluHawk retail development, and the Advent Health sports arena, as well as two high schools — one at each end of this stretch. City planners believe this would bring an additional 700 cars to the area every day.
City of Overland Park spokesperson Meg Ralph told FOX4 city leaders are aware some traffic flow changes will need to be made.
“Ultimately, what the staff recommendation was and what the city council approved was a right-in right out to that facility, meaning you can make a right in and a right out, but you cannot make a left out,” Ralph said.
Neighbors are concerned, but resigned to the fact, that more traffic is coming. That includes Monika Bonavia, who lives in the nearby town homes.
“The traffic, the people, it’s already here. We’re already dealing with it. If we’re going to stay here, this is what we’re going to deal with,” Bonavia said.

FOX4 reached out to AutoSoak leaders via the company website, but our email wasn’t answered on Tuesday.
Bonavia is among the neighbors who hope to see more traffic lights installed here. The sports complex is already drawing traffic, which is likely to increase. One more business will add even more cars.
