INDIANAPOLIS — A pedestrian was hospitalized after a crash on the near east side of Indianapolis on Tuesday night.
Per the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 3500 block of English Avenue around 7:10 p.m. on a report of a crash. When officers arrived at the scene, they found an adult female pedestrian who had been involved in a crash.
Police indicated that the woman was transported from the scene to Eskenazi Hospital in serious condition. Hospital personnel later told IMPD that the woman's condition had improved from serious to stable.
Despite the woman's improving condition, police confirmed they are investigating the crash as a "serious bodily injury" crash because several of the victim's ribs were broken during the incident.
After a preliminary investigation, officers determined the woman and one other individual were crossing the street before the crash. Police believe the two pedestrians were pulling wagons behind them because they were on their way to do laundry.
IMPD indicated that the driver that struck the woman did not appear to be intoxicated. Police do not currently believe speed was a factor in the crash.
Investigators reported that the driver told them he did not see the pedestrian in the roadway before he struck her. He added that he was rushing to the hospital because his wife was in labor.
"You have to really watch on these streets because, unfortunately, people can't see you," IMPD Captain Don Weilhammer said during media briefing. The speeds — when you're doing 30 or 40 — that's pretty quick. So, (reflective clothing is) what we highly recommend.
"Or another thing that a lot of people have is, almost everybody has a cell phone. Turn on the flashlight, and sort of flash it where you're crossing. Or just a regular handheld flashlight will help."
Per IMPD, the pedestrian that was struck was crossing in a designated area before the crash. Police do not expect any criminal charges to be filed during their investigation.
Police are still encouraging those with information on the crash to call IMPD at (317) 327-6549. Alternatively, tipsters who wish to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana by calling (317) 262-8477, using the P3Tips mobile app or visiting www.CrimeTips.org.
