Fort Wayne reaches nimble 1year deal with police unions

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — In January, the City of Fort Wayne reached an atypical deal with the two police unions that represent local officers.
They opened up the agreements with both the Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council (FOPLC) and Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association (PBA), which weren't set to expire until 2025. The city amended those deals, which included adding more pay, before stitching it back together.
“It’s very important that the City of Fort Wayne look at recruiting and retention, and this raise approved by City Council is just going to help that one step further,” said FOPLC President John Nichter in January when the deal was renegotiated.
Now, the city is still fighting the same recruiting issues, and the deal reached on Tuesday reflects that.
"Our goal is always to be competitive against other police organizations," Nichter said Tuesday. "All city employees received a 3% raise, so that was the biggest increase in this year's contract."
To stay competitive, the City of Fort Wayne decided to agree to one-year deals with the police unions instead of the three-year deals that the city has brokered in the past.
The shorter term allows Fort Wayne to be a little more nimble and adapt to a market where wages are rising quickly for public safety officials.
"The City of Fort Wayne didn't feel comfortable forecasting what their revenue stream is going to be in the future," Nichter said. "They felt comfortable agreeing for one year, just 2025, that way we can over next year look and get some different models and projections for the future."
The full contracts for the PBA and FOPLC can be seen on the city's website.
