Gamecocks power past No. 25 Clemson in OT, 9188
Dec 17, 2024
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Collin Murray-Boyles scored 22 points and Morris Ugusuk hit a 3-pointer in overtime to give South Carolina the lead for good in a 91-88 victory over rival No. 25 Clemson on Tuesday night.
South Carolina (8-3) seemed to have things in hand, ahead 76-69 in the final two minutes of regulation. But Chase Hunter had three 3-pointers down the stretch, including a bank shot with 0.3 seconds left that tied it at 80 and forced the extra period.
Ugusuk hit a 3-pointer and Murray-Boyles followed with a pair of foul shots to extend the lead.
Duke transfer Christian Reeves had two foul shots for Clemson (9-3) down 89-87 with 3.7 seconds to go. But he missed the first one and his line drive attempt banked in. Jamarii Thomas was quickly fouled by the Tigers and made both.
Hunter’s floating 3-pointer at the buzzer came up short as South Carolina won its fifth straight. Hunter finished with 27 points and Schieffelin had 23 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out in overtime.
Stute finished with 19 points for the Gamecocks.
Takeaways
Clemson: The Tigers made the rankings with a splashy, 80-76 win over top-5 Kentucky earlier this month. But they have lost two straight and will likely fall from the rankings.
South Carolina: The Gamecocks are finding their stride with five straight victories, including three over ACC opponents in that stretch.
KEY STATS
The Gamecocks shot 51.7 percent (30-of-58) for the game and a sizzling 65.5 percent (19-of-29) in the second half and overtime periods combined. The Gamecocks improve to 11-1 in three seasons under Paris when shooting above 50.0 percent, the only loss coming at Missouri in Paris’ first season in 2022-23.
Carolina held a 35-28 edge in the rebounding column and is 8-0 when out-rebounding its opponents so far this season.
NOTABLES
Sophomore forward and local product Collin Murray-Boyles, a preseason All-SEC selection, had 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting. He scored 15 in the second half and overtime and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the game. He finished with nine rebounds, one shy of his fourth straight double-double.
Leading into tonight, Murray-Boyles was the first Gamecock player since Chris Silva in 2018-19 to have three consecutive double-doubles. Silva did it the final three games of his storied career that season.
Tonight marked Murray-Boyles’ team-leading third 20-point game of the season. He picked up his fourth foul with 16 minutes to go in the second half and played the entirety of the game with four fouls up until fouling out with 50 seconds remaining in overtime.
In a stretch from 6:34 to 1:50 remaining, Murray-Boyles scored 11 of the team’s 13 points as he took over the game for Carolina.
Graduate Nick Pringle had another solid game with 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting.
Senior Myles Stute broke out of his shooting slump with 19 points thanks to 5-of-7 shooting from behind the arc. Four of the five 3s he hit were in the corner of the floor.
The backcourt duo of Jamarii Thomas (11) and Jacobi Wright (9) combined for 20 points. Both players played 41 minutes each in the overtime contest.
Tonight marked the fifth-straight win (sixth-straight at home) for Carolina dating back to Nov. 8 against SC State.
Head coach Lamont Paris now has four career top-25 wins as a head coach, all coming the last two seasons at South Carolina. He improves to 2-1 against in-state Clemson in his three seasons in Columbia as head coach.
