ALEXANDER CO., N.C. – Two NC Highway Patrol troopers are hurt after a police chase that started in Iredell County and ended in Alexander County. It happened Tuesday, December 17th around 4:00pm. A trooper tried to stop a Jeep Liberty for speeding on US64. The trooper says the driver refused to stop and tried to speed off. The driver traveled onto Liberty Church Road, where troopers say he lost control, drove off the roadway, re-entered the roadway, and then collided with a patrol car.
The trooper continued to chase the driver onto Old Mountain Road. That’s where the trooper executed a “precision immobilization technique (PIT),” which caused the driver to lose control and drive into a private driveway. As the trooper pulled into the driveway, the driver rammed the patrol car. The chase continued and a second PIT maneuver was attempted. The trooper says the driver’s vehicle went into a ditch.
Highway Patrol says when the trooper approached the car, the driver refused to get out of the car, and drove off again, re-entering the roadway and continuing south on Old Mountain Road. A second trooper then joined the chase. The driver crossed the center line, and hit a tractor-trailer head-on. This crash caused the driver of the Jeep to collide with the second trooper’s vehicle.
The suspect, Herman Eugene Williams Jr., 41, of Statesville, NC, was transported by medical helicopter to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, with non-life-threatening injuries.
Highway Patrol says its initial investigation shows that speed and impairment were contributing factors in the collision. Old Mountain Road was closed in the area for several hours during the on-scene investigation. Charges are pending.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured. Both troopers were transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.
