Latest school shooting has some parents asking ‘What are the signs?’

CHARLOTTE, NC, – A 15-year-old girl killed a student and a teacher before killing herself in Wisconsin. Investigators say finding the shooter’s motive is a top priority moving forward.
Data from K-12 School Shooting Database shows there have been more than 320 shootings on school grounds this year alone.
“I think the fact that we continue to see school shootings and at younger ages at smaller schools, at a wider variety of sort of shooter demographics, that there are continued, you know, things that we are not dealing with as a community, as a country,” Shannon Reid, UNC Charlotte, Associate Professor said.
Shannon Reid, associate professor of Criminology at UNC Charlotte says early intervention is key.
“Parents and the families, they know these children the best,” Reid said. “They have to be the first line of sort of raising an alert if they feel like the child has changed behavior dramatically or is becoming more self-isolating or starting to talk about things that maybe they haven’t talked about before that would maybe hint at a change in their emotional wellbeing.”
Professor Reid says the shooting at Abundant Life Christian in Madison gives us a chance to take a closer look at a concerning trend.
“I think one of the things we need to pay attention to is how quickly we move on. Right? How quickly we consider it commonplace because that is being internalized by these children,”Reid said.
Reid says adults should use this as a chance to pay closer attention to the children around them.
“I think as parents, one of the things we need to pay attention as information comes out about this shooting or previous shootings is what are the things that resonate to what you are dealing with with your child or your school, or you’re hearing about from your students, about other students. They have the information, they know what’s going on,” Reid said.
She also says it’s important to report any potentially violent activity because it’s always better to safe than sorry. Many school districts in North Carolina use the Say Something Anonymous Reporting Tool.
