Tricounty council asks residents for input on how to improve transportation in rural communities
Dec 17, 2024
Tuesday night, the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester council of governments asked for input from residents on how they can improve transportation access and safety in the tri-county.
The council asked locals to identify problems and develop priorities for their long-range transportation plan funding over the next 20 years. One resident said as Awendaw continues to grow he hopes the council will make the access points onto highway 17 safer specifically Seewee Road, Doar road and Upper Doar Road.
"All of those areas are designated business areas or areas for development beyond residential so they're likely to see increased traffic so making sure we have traffic patterns that provide for access and exit from 17 into the community is critical," said Allen Rioux, a resident of Awendaw.
Tuesday was the third of four open houses to hear from residents on transportation needs.Senior transportation planner Sarah cox says so far, safety and connectivity are the prime concerns for people living in the tri-county."What we've been hearing in prior meetings we've had is we're really seeing safety and alternative transportation come into the forefront. Congestion isn't heard as much but safety and connectivity whether that be bike and pedestrian as well as transit," said Sarah Cox, the Senior Transportation Planner of the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments.
Cox hopes that residents who were unable to make it to the meeting will take the survey so they can plan for resident's needs.
"What we're really planning for is our residents what we're trying to address is their needs. Where do they see this region in charge of transportation and their vision for transportation 5, 10, 20 years down the road," said Cox.
Residents say safety is their number one priority for the plan.
"I commute practically daily into mount pleasant so being able to leave the community and exit 17 back into the community are really important to us," said Rioux.
If you couldn't make tonight's meeting, there will be one more at the Bonneau town hall on December 19th.
