BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) —  The Bismarck Riverfront Trail is a popular outdoor destination for many North Dakotans, where they can take in the sights and sounds of the beautiful landscape. However, some say there is one eyesore along that path — the Bismarck Expressway Pedestrian Tunnel. But the community is looking to make every part of the trail (tunnel included) a little more beautiful, and as such, the painting has begun. Local artists Nicole Gagner and Molly McLain have spent years trying to add a mixed-media mural to the long, dark tunnel. They say that murals are a great way to detract from tagging and graffiti in public spaces. The two eventually received a $15,000 grant from the AARP in June, but Gagner and McLain decided they didn't want to be the only ones responsible for this work of art. Since then, the two have been hosting painting parties throughout Bismarck to help with priming the mural. One arrested after assault on ND Highway Patrol trooper "I think it's really important for the community to see themselves reflected in the space around them, so you know that the parks are for you," says Gagner. "That's just really important for the community to be able to feel connected to those spaces that are public. They're for them." McLain says that more than 600 people from Bismarck have contributed to the project so far. Their next painting session will be on December 27, and take place at the Morton Mandan Public Library.
