The overwhelmingly popular scouting report on the Madison girls basketball team reads that if you stop or slow down Zoey Deligianis, you’ll beat the Blue Streaks. Welp, that scouting report took a pretty big hit again Dec. 17. Deligianis scored 21 points, but it was the supporting cast pouring in 49 more points that lit another match to said scouting report in Madison’s 70-41 win over visiting Harvey. Freshman Gianna LaMarco scored 18 points, junior Amara Morant scored 10 and freshman Madelyn White scored nine as the youthful Blue Streaks improved to 4-1 this season while serving another reminder to the area that they are much more than the Zoey Deligianis Show. “I think we did a really good job of moving the ball around tonight,” Madison coach Heather Reho said. “We had six players score for us. Zoey is a big part of what we do, but other girls are able to score for us, too.” In the days leading up to the game, Harvey coach Jerimie Acree admitted his game plan was to shut down Deligianis and ride to victory. “My thought was I saw they had a freshman starting, No. 5 (LaMarco) and thought, ‘Hey, we’ve got to make this freshman beat us,'” Acree said. “The more I watched film on her, I said, ‘She might be able to,’ so I had to move to another scheme.” Not much seemed to work. Man-to-man sets, zone — even a box-and-1 — revealed that even though Deligianis, a Tiffin commit, can score, so can a lot of other Blue Streaks. “I have so much belief in my teammates,” Deligianis said. “They help me beyond words.” Gianna LaMarco and Zoey Deligianis of Madison discuss how the team has grown together and have a good scoring balance this season. pic.twitter.com/7mr9PCl4Ij — News-Herald preps (@NHPreps) December 18, 2024 LaMarco got her team going by fueling an early 10-0 run. She scored four buckets in that stretch and dished for an assist on the other hoop. “When I start off hot and make my first shot, I like to keep going,” she said. “Since (Deligianis) is going to get face-guarded or double-teamed, other people need to hep her off the ball and stuff like that.” Madison had a commanding 37-21 lead near the end of the second quarter courtesy of a Deligianis drive when Harvey’s Jazlyn Taveras Miller hit a 3 at the halftime buzzer to cut the gap to 37-24. Harvey (4-2) looked as if it was going to make a serious run at Madison when Jayla Holloway hit a bucket at the 3:35 mark of the third quarter to make it an eight-point game at 41-33. But Madison went on a 10-1 run to end the third quarter, with LaMarco hitting a 3, Morant making a pair of buckets and senior Leah Brock making a shot in the paint. The eight-point deficit quickly turned into 17-point gorge, and the Red Raiders never recovered. “We show flashes,” Acree said. “Now we have to play over the course of 32 minutes.” Madison’s lead grew to 62-39 on a White bucket, with two Deligianis baskets making for a 29-8 run that ended the game. Haleigh Lewis had 15 to lead Harvey, while Da’Yonna Jackson had nine. The Red Raiders play Edgewood later this week. Coach Jerimie Acree of @GoooooooRaiders discusses some learning moments his team can learn from after a loss to Madison tonight pic.twitter.com/YI7PPYLSlx — News-Herald preps (@NHPreps) December 18, 2024 “I told the ladies we didn’t lose this game tonight per se,” Acree said. “We lost it in the offseason. … Hopefully it’s a learning experience we’ll get better from.” Madison will look for a 5-1 start when it hosts Conneaut on Dec. 19. “I’m really happy with the balance tonight,” Reho said. “We are young, so we are still learning. Our second halves been better than our firsts. We have to keep the tempo up, play Madison basketball and stay true to what we do.” THE SCORE (DEC. 17) Madison 70, Harvey 41
