FORECAST: Clearing and much warmer, rain returns Wednesday
Dec 17, 2024
It was still damp this morning, thanks to last night's rain and lingering clouds. Those same clouds are starting to clear out, and we'll enjoy a few hours of sunshine before the day ends. To go with that, temperatures have steadily risen since yesterday, and we'll see peak readings in the upper 50s and lower 60s this afternoon. We should soak this up while it's here because it will start turning chilly again tonight under a clear sky. Overnight lows will fall back into the upper 30s and lower 40s before clouds and rain rapidly return on Wednesday morning.
The switch will be flipped quickly, as it will turn overcast over a few hours, followed by rain arriving as early as 9-10 AM Wednesday. By lunchtime, the entire area will be soggy, with waves of scattered rain continuing throughout the afternoon and evening. Temperatures will only get back into the lower 50s, and once the cold front passes by and it starts drying out, it will get even colder Wednesday night. By Thursday, northwest winds will take hold, and we'll only reach the 40s despite a partly cloudy sky. The week and the fall season will end on Friday with a clipper system dropping down from the north. Snow showers will be likely across the mountains, but the rest of the area will stay dry with a mostly cloudy sky. As we head into the weekend, we will all experience an even colder blast of air behind this clipper.
Breezy northwest winds will take hold on Saturday, keeping us in the 20s and 30s from west to east, perfect timing for the first official day of winter. It will get even colder as Canadian high pressure settles overhead on Sunday and into the following Monday. High temperatures for most will not get above freezing, and overnight lows will drop into the teens. Only DC and those along the Chesapeake Bay will be able to get above freezing each afternoon and stay in the 20s overnight. Get ready to bundle up for the holidays!
Have a great rest of your Tuesday!
