ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC)— Congratulations to our latest Golden Apple Award winner, Sister Karlien Bach. Sister Karlien has been teaching young ladies at Our Lady of Mercy for 45 years. "Not only is she a teacher of theology, but she is a teacher of life. She really helps our students and guides them through different challenges, not only in the classroom, but also in the community." said Principal Dr. Sherylanne Diodato. Sister Karlien was a student at Mercy herself years ago and was nominated by a current student who sees the difference she is making both in and out of the classroom. "I nominated Sister Karlien not only because she is an amazing teacher, but she shows and tells us that she loves us. She makes learning fun and engaging and overall is an amazing person," Colleen Flowers said. "She's an amazing woman because she not only works with our students here, but she does a lot in the community. Working with the homeless and taking care of the elderly sisters that she lives with," Dr. Diodato added. In addition to all of that, she also helps keep the school's parking lot in order. "She also is my right-hand person in the parking lot in the morning. She runs the traffic for me, which is awesome, on the days I cannot be out there," said Dr. Diodato. "She did dress up as a traffic cone for Halloween and it was so funny to see her out there dancing around," Flowers added. "I have the best job in the galaxy. I teach the best kids in the universe, and I go to the best school possible. So, I have the best job. I'm sorry for you folks, but I have the best job on the planet," Sister Karlien said after the surprise. She uses humor to connect with students but is no pushover. "I am not easy. I am firm and have high expectations and accountability is very big. They respond to the firm hand and they love you back just as much as you love them and it's wonderful." said Sister Karlien. It's a full circle moment for someone who knows what it's like to be a student here. "I was inspired by a teacher when I went here and she taught theology, so I knew when I left, I needed to come back and pay it back," said Bach. Maybe someday one of her current students will follow in her footsteps too. Golden Apple: Congratulations to Sister Karlien Bach! Golden Apple: Congratulations to Lindsay Titus!
