Suspects in monthslong Kerman mail thefts arrested

KERMAN, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Five suspects were arrested following an investigation into multiple cases of fraud and identity theft regarding the theft of mail belonging to Kerman residents, the Kerman Police Department said.
Police say residents have been dealing with mail thefts over the past several months and the investigations that followed yielded information about possible suspects and vehicles involved.
Early Sunday morning on Dec. 15, an officer was patrolling the west side of the city limits when they reported spotting a vehicle matching the description related to recent mail thefts. The two men inside were contacted following a traffic stop.
As police conducted their investigation, they say they received a call from a home in the 200 block of South Thomas Avenue for a mail theft from a community mailbox that had just happened. Surveillance video captured footage of the theft involving a sedan that matched the description of the one being stopped.
Investigators say the two men were arrested after being found with tools that helped them access the community mailboxes and over 670 pieces of stolen mail, including packages. The driver was also found to have a warrant from Sacramento for felony assault.
Detectives report the vehicle stop led to a search warrant at a home outside of city limits where they found more stolen mail containing confidential information of Kerman residents and equipment to make tools to fraudulently access financial information and mailboxes.
As a result of this search warrant, officers reported arresting three additional suspects.
Kerman Police says they are working with U.S. Postal Service Investigators to contact the addresses on the mail and packages recovered to return the stolen items and determine if they are victims of other related crimes.
Any Kerman residents who believe they may be victims of mail theft, identity theft, or fraud are encouraged to file a report by contacting Detective P. Clark at 559-550-0798.
