(KRON) -- A longtime sushi staple is closing after decades in downtown San Mateo. Sushi Sam's Edomata is shutting its doors for good at the end of the month, the restaurant announced in a social media post.
Sushi Sam Edomata, located at 218 E 3rd Ave., will have its last day of service on Saturday, Dec. 28. The upcoming closure comes as owner and chef Sam Sugiyama is retiring after 36 years, according to a social media post by Sushi Sam's Edomata.
However, the restaurant is relocating and rebranding under new ownership. Sushi Sam's Edomata will be moving to a new location under the new name "Sushi Edomata."
The restaurant did not announce who will be the owner of the upcoming rebranded location or where it will move to. It will not be led by Sugiyama who is dubbed as the "heart and soul behind Sushi Sam's."
