2 teens arrested in San Mateo Macy’s armed robbery

(KRON) – An incident of shoplifting escalated into an armed robbery at a Macy’s in the city of San Mateo, according to the San Mateo Police Department.
At 7:38 p.m. on Sunday, SMPD officers responded to the Hillsdale Shopping Center for a report of a robbery. The department’s dispatch learned that a man stole items, brandished a knife at security and fought security.
Upon arrival, officers witnessed a security guard chasing a man through the parking lot and back into the mall. Police said the loss prevention officer was assaulted by the suspect before they arrived.
Responding officers were about to detain the suspect and found a loaded Glock .40 caliber handgun inside a satchel affixed to the suspect’s torso. San Mateo PD said the firearm was discovered to be stolen out of Richmond.

The suspect was identified as a 17-year-old East Palo Alto resident. The minor was not the same suspect who brandished a knife at security, said SMPD. The assailant was identified as 18-year-old East Palo Alto resident Jose Miguel Rodriguez Vasquez.
Police later learned the duo began stealing clothing and fragrance merchandise. As the suspects were leaving the store, Macy’s loss prevention attempted to detain the suspects. San Mateo PD said that is when Rodriguez Vasquez pulled out a knife and threatened loss prevention and the teenager fled the scene.
The teenagers stole approximately $1,200 worth of items.
Rodriguez Vasquez was arrested and transported to San Mateo County Jail for suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, conspiracy, terrorist threats, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
The unidentified minor was arrested and taken to the San Mateo County Youth Services Center for suspicion of obstructing of resisting an officer, burglary, conspiracy, minor in possession of a handgun, carrying a loaded firearm in public, and receiving stolen property.
