Driver killed in headon crash that shut down Hanover roadway for hours

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Tuesday morning head-on crash in Hanover County left a driver dead and shut down the roadway for hours.
The crash took place the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 17 on Washington Highway (Route 1) near Doswell Road, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
A spokesperson for the Hanover County Sheriff's Office initially told 8News that the crash caused "significant injuries." The spokesperson later provided an update, confirming that an involved driver had died.

Additional information is being withheld pending notification of that driver's family, as well as the completion of the Traffic Safety Unit's preliminary investigation. No further details are available at this time.
All lanes in both directions surrounding the crash were shut down for hours. They have since reopened.
