NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Norfolk Health Department just launched a new website, along with commercials to help more people get the help they need for mental health, substance abuse and more.
The ad campaign, which centers around a garbage truck, hits home this holiday for many families.
"What we want people to focus on is opening up the conversation, removing the stigmas around addiction and other mental health issues," said Kathy Lamm, VDH marketing, communications, PR and mental health lead at the Norfolk Health Department.
The commercial shows two people in the back of a trash truck.
"The idea behind it is that as a society, do we throw away people that have addictive problems or suffer from addiction." Lamm said.
The other message for addicts is to not throw away your own life, because there is help available.
The campaign links to the Norfolk Health Department's new website, which offers many resources through its mental health portal.
There are self assessments to help you gauge your own anxiety, stress or, perhaps, recognize addiction in yourself.
"When you do a self assessment, the resources that you'll get, you'll get articles, podcasts, you'll get videos, you'll get apps that you can download," Lamm said. "These are all based on behavioral cognitive therapy. And they will meet you where you are."
Along with self help and local resources, the website and campaign offer hope in situations that sometimes seem hopeless.
The new website also aims to be easy to navigate for other services as well. The homepage has quick bullet points to guide you to each service the Norfolk Health Department provides, from food and environmental health, to mother/baby nutrition programs, disease monitoring and more.
