ScreenshotA Brownington man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in the September 2022 fatal shooting of a man in Lamoille County. Judge Mary Morrissey handed down the prison term to 64-year-old Michael Chadwick during a hearing Monday in Lamoille County Superior criminal court in Hyde Park.Chadwick had pleaded guilty last month to a charge of second-degree murder for killing Mark Benjamin, 42, also of Brownington, in Belvidere.According to charging documents, Benjamin’s mother had been in a long-term relationship with Chadwick and she had received a final relief from abuse order against Chadwick a day before the fatal shooting.On the afternoon of the shooting, Sept. 21, 2022, Chadwick went to a camp on Bog Road in Belvidere that he had been prohibited from going to as a result of that restraining order, the charging documents stated. Chadwick encountered Benjamin at the camp as Benjamin was leaving, according to the charging documents. Benjamin had gone to the camp to change the locks to keep Chadwick out, the filings stated.READ MORE As Benjamin drove down the driveway to leave, Chadwick fired two shots at him, striking him in the neck and arm, killing him, according to the charging documents. Following a standoff with responding police, Chadwick was taken into custody. He has remained in custody since his arrest.Chadwick reached a plea deal with the prosecution last month, heading off a jury trial.  Lamoille County State’s Attorney Aliena Gerhard, under the plea agreement, was able to ask for a sentence for Chadwick of 20 years to life in prison, all suspended except for up to 17 years to serve in prison.Chadwick’s attorney, Kelly Green, was permitted to seek a sentence for her client of 20 years to life in prison, all suspended but 12 years to serve in prison.The 15-year prison sentence handed down Monday by Morrissey, the judge, fell roughly in the middle of those two requests.Chadwick is currently incarcerated at the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield. Read the story on VTDigger here: Judge sentences Brownington man to 15 years in prison in Lamoille County murder case .
