Some residents without MLGW services after Collierville fire

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- More information is coming to light about a gas line fire that lit up the Collierville sky Monday night.
A towering flame had plenty of people in awe Monday night as fire was coming from the ground on Bailey Woods Drive in Collierville.
As it turns out, the fire started at a Memphis, Light, Gas and Water gas line.
"We had a ruptured eight-inch gas distribution main that was likely caused due to some lightning that was in the area," MLGW President Doug McGowen said. "Sometimes lightning can strike a facility that's close by and translate down to that pipe and that caused the gas there to catch on fire and that pipe to actually break open. It was venting gas which was lit on fire."

McGowen said crews quickly secured valves and allowed the natural gas to burn off.
He said the large flames were a result of gas being under pressure.
"It's very much like when you turn the burner on your grill up too high, the flames get really high," McGowen said. "Well, imagine the pressure that's in this eight-inch main where it's much higher pressure. So the gas, it's a large volume and shooting up in the air."
McGowen said some electrical lines and poles were burned, leaving some in the area without power for about an hour.
About 100 gas customers are still without services as work is underway to fix the gas line.

"That number could grow if we have to go a little further back in the system to replace the pipe, it could grow to several hundred," McGowen said. "But right now, it's in the in the low one hundreds for both electric and for the gas customers."
He said there is an investigation to determine the root cause of the problem but right now, it seems to have been triggered by the lightning storm.
"Clearly, something was too close to the gas line," McGowen said. "We'll determine what that was and make sure that it's routed away from that gas line in the future."
MLGW said conditions are safe.
Right now, they are repairing the gas line and the electric circuit.
