(Updated) A 38-year-old man named Hassau Powell was found dead last week in a Yale New Haven Hospital office building, apparently from a medical problem. The “sudden death” occurred at 789 Howard Ave. on Monday, Dec. 9, according to city police. Police responded to the Yale New Haven Health-owned building at around 11:09 a.m. on that day. “A male was found in an office at that address; it does not appear that the male was an employee,” department spokesperson Christian Bruckhart said.Police Chief Karl Jacobson said that the investigation at this point points to the man as having been homeless and staying in the building. He said a medical examiner’s autopsy found no signs of foul play; the death stemmed from a “medical issue” that may have involved an overdose. The office is still awaiting toxicology results on that question.Police later identified the man as Powell.Asked for comment, Yale and YNHH spokespeople referred the Independent to city police for case-specific questions. Regarding security, YNHH spokesperson Mark D’Antonio said, “There was no threat to staff or patients and we continue to partner with the New Haven police as their investigation continues.”
