Archdale neighbors concerned with speeding

ARCHDALE, N.C. (WGHP) -- Residents along Englewood Drive are calling for action to address what they say is a growing safety concern due to speeding cars and ignored stop signs.
More than 30 residents signed a petition asking the city of Archdale to implement measures to make their street safer. Under Archdale’s policy, at least 75% of affected residents must sign a petition before any request can be considered. After meeting that requirement, the item is now set to go before the Archdale City Council on Tuesday.
“They’re going really fast and really not paying any attention,” said one concerned resident who lives along the road. “It’s a matter of time before someone gets hurt. I’ve been waiting, and it’s a really big concern. I’m sure it is for everybody.”
Residents say the issue is particularly alarming because children often walk, bike and play in the area.
“There’s a few that walk, a few that ride bicycles and other things, and I’m afraid they’re going to get hit,” the resident said. “They [kids] don’t always pay attention to the cars, so it’s on kids and cars.”
After reviewing the petition and traffic patterns, city staff are recommending lowering the speed limit to 25 miles per hour and adding stop signs at Truman Avenue, creating a three-way stop. However, some residents believe more needs to be done.
“They need to do something,” the resident said. “The speed limit is not going to slow it down."
If approved, the city will monitor traffic patterns after these changes are implemented. If speeding continues, officials say more permanent traffic-calming measures such as speed humps or raised crosswalks could be considered.
“It shows ... they care about the community,” the resident said.
The Archdale City Council is expected to hear these concerns and potentially vote on the recommendations during its meeting Tuesday night at 7 p.m. If approved, residents could see changes in the coming weeks.
