ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) -- A man will spend decades in prison after trying to kill his wife in Eden in 2021, according to a statement released by the Rockingham County and Caswell County District Attorney’s Offices.
A Rockingham County jury found Donald Ray Newman, of Danville, guilty on Dec. 9 of:
attempted first-degree murder
assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury
first-degree burglary
He was sentenced to three consecutive terms of imprisonment of 180 to 228 months (15 to 19 years), 73 to 100 months (about 6 to 8 years) and 83 to 112 months (about 7 to 9 years).
During the six-day trial, District Attorney Katy Gregg proved to the jury that Newman attempted to kill his estranged wife Angela Williams on Oct. 9, 2021. Gregg called eighteen witnesses and introduced 173 exhibits.
The evidence showed that Williams was in her Eden home when he broke in through the basement window.
Newman came upstairs to the kitchen where he found her attempting to call for help. He pointed his gun at her and ordered her to put her phone down. Newman began punching Williams in the face and telling her that he was going to kill her.
Williams fell to the floor and landed on her stomach. Newman tried to bind her hands together with a zip tie that he brought with him. When he was unsuccessful, he lifted her to her feet and asked Williams where her gun was.
Williams told Newman that the gun was in her bedroom. While Newman held Williams at gunpoint, he tried to retrieve her gun. Newman then shot Williams in the chest with his own gun.
Despite having been shot, Williams was able to get to her gun and shoot Newman one time. Williams ran to her neighbor’s house for help.
Newman took Williams’s vehicle and drove away. He left the vehicle about one mile down the road.
Authorities believe Newman had parked his vehicle at that location and walked to Williams’s house to avoid detection.
Newman later drove himself to a hospital in Virginia about two hours away.
