Wisconsin DNR investigating 69,300gallon crude oil spill

OAKLAND, Wis. (WFRV) - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is investigating a crude oil spill along Enbridge Energy's Line 6 pipeline in the town of Oakland.
On Nov. 11, 2024, Enbridge reported a two-gallon spill of crude oil at its Cambridge Station to the DNR, the National Response Center, and the Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration. The DNR conducted a site visit that same day and returned on Dec. 6 to ensure Enbridge was taking appropriate response actions.

On Nov. 14, Enbridge revised the spill estimate to three barrels (126 gallons). However, on Dec. 13, the estimate grew significantly, with Enbridge reporting the spill at 1,650 barrels (69,300 gallons) based on field investigations, observations, and updated data.
The DNR plans to conduct another site visit within the next week.

Under Wisconsin law, entities responsible for environmental contamination must report and remediate the damage. Enbridge is providing weekly updates to the DNR regarding its investigation and cleanup efforts.
The DNR is continuing to evaluate the situation and may pursue enforcement actions, such as a corrective action order, as the investigation progresses.
