Huntington moves to demolish former factory set ablaze by arson in 2022

HUNTINGTON, Ind. (WANE) — On Monday night, Huntington's Reuse Advisory Committee met with multiple city council members and representatives with the Indiana Finance Authority and the Environmental Protective Agency (EPA).
The topic was the HK Porter building, a former factory that has since turned into a blemish on the outskirts of Huntington's downtown.
A 2023 federal grant helped the city put together resources to demolish the building, and after Monday's meeting, it's now becoming clear when the building will be gone.
"We submitted our initial draft of the work plan, the EPA took that and was processing through it," said Bryn Keplinger, the city's director of community development and redevelopment. "I think they hit what I coined in our meetings at the 'aha moment.'"
That "aha moment" was when the parties involved realized that the building had degraded to a point where grant funds now qualify for a full "wet" demolition, which involves spraying the building with water to control dust and reduce risk of airborne contaminants in the surrounding area. During the committee meeting, Keplinger said the Indiana Department of Natural Resources also investigated the building and shared similar sentiments.
Keplinger said the new demolition method will be more efficient and save a lot of money.
"What that's probably going to do is probably cut a couple hundred thousand off of the project I would guess, and so that just makes it that much more affordable for all the parties involved," Keplinger said.
Huntington Mayor Richard Strick told WANE 15 in a statement Tuesday that he is happy with the project's recent developments:
I am encouraged by the progress being made on the project, and we are on schedule according to our internal timelines. I especially appreciate the communication and thoughtful planning by [the] EPA, IFA, SME and our city staff in development [and] redevelopment. That collaboration will lead to better outcomes at lower costs than previously assumed. The advisory committee members are doing a great job of asking questions and helping communicate answers to the neighbors near the site. I am looking forward to the day when the major demolition work begins.

At the committee meeting, Keplinger said that timeline would see the HK Porter building demolished by the end of 2025.
